A Great Manager Will Help Grow and Scale Your SpeeDee Business

A manager looks at data on his screen as he speaks on the phone about how to grow and scale his business.

If You Want to Build a Multi-Unit Business, Hire a Great Manager

As you begin to grow and scale your SpeeDee Oil Change & Auto Service® business, it’s key to have a great manager or managers. If you’re already a multi-unit owner, you know that as your business begins to scale, it’s necessary to step away from operations to focus on growth.

Tyson Daniels, a multi-unit owner/operator in Idaho, says, “You should help your employees grow with you. FullSpeed Automotive University has a ton of training opportunities. There are ASE (Automotive Service Excellence) prep courses and business management courses. It depends on the direction the employee wants to go.”

Hiring and developing the right managers is vital. Below, we’ll talk about a few skills a successful manager possesses.

A great manager teaches employees to be consistent. The SpeeDee home office provides great training and support, and a great manager reinforces that training and has guidelines to ensure consistency.

Customers love consistency. For example, McDonalds is a huge business that has dominated the fast-food industry for as long as most of us can remember.

There are many reasons behind their success, but one of them is consistency. People know exactly what they’re going to get when they go there. Starbucks is the same. Customers buy their coffee because the taste is the same every time.

This applies to SpeeDee, too. Customers need to know that they will have the same experience — friendly and efficient service — every time they have their vehicles serviced.

Good with people

A great manager is good with people. They build relationships with customers, which encourages them to return and to recommend the business to other people. Word of mouth may be the best way to grow and scale your business.

Relationship building is crucial to creating customer loyalty. It’s human nature to want to feel known and valued. For example, remembering a customer’s name when they come in for service. Customers can be drawn away if service is good but impersonal. Loyal customers are unlikely to go somewhere else.

This means everyone

This is true for employees, too. A good manager motivates employees by showing interest in their success. If employees are proud of their work, it’s reflected in the way they treat customers. Their positivity about their jobs is more likely to impress customers.

Another benefit is cutting down turnover. High turnover rates are expensive and a waste of time and training.

A great manager is a high-energy person. It’s not a position for someone who prefers to work alone. On a typical day, a manager will be supervising or training employees, interacting with customers, ensuring the shop is well-organized and clean, and more, such as:

  • Interviewing job applicants
  • Scheduling shifts
  • Checking inventory and ordering supplies
  • Representing the business at an event or with a potential vendor or partner
  • Maintaining quality control
  • Overseeing cash flow
  • Creating a positive environment

A great manager enjoys staying busy and helping to grow and scale the business. In short, a great manager is an owner’s best partner.
